Introducing The Backyard Company: A Smarter, Safer Way to Build Your Tampa Bay Backyard

Company News & Tips

Building a swimming pool in Tampa Bay should be one of the most exciting projects you’ll ever take on, but for too many homeowners, it becomes stressful, confusing, or even financially risky.
Hidden markups, confusing contracts, unexpected change orders, and large draws for unfinished work have unfortunately become “normal” in the Florida pool construction industry.

We built The Backyard Company to change that.

With 15+ years of experience in the pool construction industry, we’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. We’ve seen homeowners overpay by tens of thousands. We’ve seen projects abandoned mid-way. We’ve seen builders collect draws and disappear. And we’ve seen families who lost trust in the process entirely.

So we decided to create a pool-building experience that protects homeowners instead of taking advantage of them. A model built on transparency, honesty, and open-book pricing from start to finish.

This is the future of backyard construction in Tampa Bay.

This is The Backyard Company.

Our Mission: Build Backyards the Way They Should Be Built

We’re here to do one thing:

Deliver smarter, safer, more transparent backyard construction for Tampa Bay homeowners.

We combine:

  • Cost-plus pricing (no hidden markups, ever)
  • Direct payment to subcontractors (protecting your money)
  • No draws for uncompleted work
  • A 3D Design Studio that eliminates surprises
  • Transparent scheduling & budgeting
  • Weekly updates with photos and real numbers
  • A customer-first mindset built over 15+ years in pool construction

We’re not the typical Tampa pool builder and we don’t want to be.

We built a model that homeowners can finally feel confident in.

Why We Built The Backyard Company

After years in the construction industry, we saw repeated patterns:

  • Homeowners signing contracts they didn’t fully understand
  • “All-in” pool quotes hiding major markups
  • Builders collecting 50%+ of the project cost upfront
  • Delays caused by unpaid subcontractors
  • Homeowners being left in the dark during construction
  • Incomplete or abandoned pool projects
  • No accountability when things go wrong

We believed Tampa families deserved better.

So we reverse-engineered the entire construction model and rebuilt it around protection, honesty, and transparency.

What Makes Us Different

1. Cost-Plus Pricing (Transparent & Honest)

You pay the true cost of labor and materials — with zero contractor markups.

Every invoice is visible.
Every dollar is tracked.
You stay in control.

2. You Pay Subcontractors Directly

This is the #1 way we protect homeowners.
If you pay the subs directly, your money can’t be misused or diverted.

3. No Draws for Unfinished Work

We will never ask for payment on work not completed.
You only release payments when the work is verified.

4. A 3D Design Studio That Eliminates Guessing

You’ll see every angle of your future pool and outdoor kitchen before construction begins.

5. A Customer-First Approach Backed by 15+ Years of Experience

Our team has built and managed projects across the Tampa Bay area with honesty and craftsmanship at the core.

Complete Payment Policy

1. Zero Deposits

Unlike traditional builders who require 10–50% down, we require $0 upfront. Your contract is binding, but your money stays in your account until work is complete.

2. Direct Vendor Payments

Subcontractors are paid only after we confirm their work is complete, while material suppliers are paid upfront before materials are released for delivery.

This can include:

  • Pool shell companies
  • Equipment and material suppliers
  • Tile and decking contractors
  • Plumbing and electrical trades

3. Inspection & Verification

Before each payment milestone, our team inspects workmanship against contract specs. You receive photo documentation and a checklist confirming readiness for payment. If an inspection is required, we verify that the inspection has passed before a payment is due.

4. How Payments are Made

Payments to both, The Backyard Company and approved vendors, can be paid by credit card, ACH, or check, giving homeowners control over how funds are released. Please note that certain payment methods may include processing fees, which will be clearly outlined prior to each transaction.

5. Lien Releases

For every payment to an approved vendor, The Backyard Company will secure a release of lien in exchange for the payment being made.

6. Management Fee Structure

The Backyard Company uses a simple, transparent two-part management fee structure designed to align with homeowner control and project progress. Construction Management (CM) fees are collected only when a vendor payment is made, ensuring you pay management costs in direct proportion to verified work completed. Project Management (PM) fees begin once the project enters the excavation phase and are billed weekly to cover hands-on coordination, scheduling, and on-site oversight throughout the build.

7. Punch Out & Warranty

Minor punch-out items will not delay vendor payments, as payments are issued upon verified completion of the contracted scope of work. All vendor warranties become active only after final payment for that vendor’s portion of the project has been made in full. This ensures clear completion, accountability, and warranty validation for every trade involved.

This policy eliminates the #1 risk in pool building: losing deposits to bankrupt or dishonest builders. Your money stays protected until you approve quality.
